WHY DOFOLLOW?
The html attribute nofollow was developed jointly in 2005 my Matt Cutts of Google and Jason Shellen of Blogger.com.
The attribute tells search engines not to follow links that have the attribute. Furthermore, some search engines disregard
the target link when determining search engine result positions.
The attribute was designed to help reduce certain forms of search engine spam. However, many feel nofollow has gone
too far and has a negative impact on the web 2.0 community.
Web 2.0 is driven by user interaction. Users comment on other user blogs, members post to public forums, set up profiles,
and more. Nofollow takes reciprocal links out of the equation, thereby reducing some of the incentive to interact. When
a person sets up a new blog, one of the best ways to get it rolling is to allow readers to post comments to it. If
those readers get a small reciprocal benefit in the form of a backlink, everyone wins.
It is debatable as to whether or not the attribute has been an effective tool for its original intent: spam reduction.
Anyone that runs a blog knows that dealing with spam submissions goes hand-in-hand with running a blog. Anti-spam
plugins are far more effective at reducing spam. Spammers continue to spam blogs and forums even if a site is using
the nofollow attribute.
DoFollow isn't a html protocol or attribute. It's a slang term given to sites that do not use nofollow.
How the Search Engines Utilize NoFollow
- Google follows nofollow links, but does not use them in the computation of SERP or PageRank.
- Yahoo follows nofollow links, but excludes them from search engine ranking calculations.
- Bing sometimes follows a nofollow link, sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't use nofollow for search engine ranking calculations.
- Ask.com ignores nofollow.
Why Do Follow Me Was Born
Do Follow Me was created out of the necessity of finding linking sites that were not nofollow. As more and more sites
convert to nofollow, finding these sites has become more difficult. Do Follow Me also breaks sites down by category,
PageRank, and Alexa rank. This site is a powerful tool that helps the webmaster or seo professional build backlinks.
